great debut release and new label from a rubadub shop regular featuring tracks from shop regulars. tip. this first release is made up of 3 tracks from my friends and 1 from myself. there’s no concept here other than putting out music that was otherwise not going to see the light of day. the first track is by bleaker who put out a 12inch on unknown to the unknown last year, the second by miz aka big miz whos been putting out music on dixon avenue basement jams, the third by the burrell connection who has a release on west end communications and a track on a craig knows released compilation and the last track is from myself which got a play on big mizs boiler room set. these tracks were all sent to me around the same time and it felt right to make a place for them on a record. bleaker, miz and the burrell connection have all been making waves in scotland and beyond and these 3 tracks are proof that the attention is warranted. and i dont think my track is too bad either.

tippa lee’s new album cultural ambassador will be released on stones throw, may 20, 2016. available now is the dub version of the album, dub them with reality, mixed by producer tom chasteen (dub club, natural numbers), who has reconfigured the tracks live on the mixing board with echo, reverb and various arcane electronics. the lp covers, in two variations, were screen printed in gold and black by hit & run, with artwork by ellen g. tippa lee was born and raised in kingston, jamaica. he started performing on his fathers sound system as a child, standing up on a beer bottle box to reach the mic. he made his first recordings at king tubby’s studio at the age of 12. eventually he teamed up with rappa robert and as a duo had a number of hits including “no trouble we”, an anthemic statement against police harassment, which was a number one jamaican hit in 1988 and is still played often on jamaican radio. in more recent years he has been based in the us, performing live and releasing his own underground cds.

killer 1975 gospel version of marlena shaws 1969 sister soul standard, a deep, socially conscious 45 asking some heavy questions about ghetto life set against a beautifully arranged, string heavy backdrop of low slung funk. a truly sought after rare groove, produced by the uks john abbey, the man who set up the legendary blues & soul magazine as well as the contempo, mojo and ichiban labels who worked with countless soul and funk artists throughout his lengthly career. quite tough to track down on 45, woman of the ghetto is now available again, dug out from the mighty sam records catalogue, the first release in their impressive discography now made available again on dinked 45 as it was presented in 1975, legitimately licensed, remastered and reissued in conjunction with sam records new york city.

strut present an inspired new afro-electronic project for 2016, kondi band, a collaboration between sierra leonean kondi (thumb piano) player sorie kondi and us producer / dj chief boima, who himself has sierra leonean roots. the project was spawned after boima happened upon an online video of one of sories original tracks. sorie kondi is a blind musician with a will to thrive like no person i have met before, explains boima. my work with him began with a youtube link. i spotted the video for his track without money no family and was struck by his beautiful vocals and socially-conscious lyrics. these incredible melodies he was playing on his namesake thumb piano (the kondi) sealed the deal: i immediately decided to remix it.

muchias is a collaborative project from normals welcome co-founder nik kozub (the paronomasiac / shout out out out out) and modular synth artist borys (who has toured extensively supporting junior boys, and whose collaborations with junior boys’ jeremy greenspan have seen release on the jiaolong and hyperdub labels). brooding modular techno, acid, and a hint of new beat influence are all represented on this compelling 4 tracker.

hans berg and johanna knutsson return to the ufo station with their fourth release, a powerful trippy trip, through warped time and space. and guess who was waiting for them at the station? well,none other than fellow space traveller dungeon acid, who delivers a remix that just might knock your space pants off. the title track alien power is obviously inspired by the quantum fusion core phase shift warp power engine that drives the ufo station, a steady beat to keep you on the right side of the force, whereas the dungeon acid remix is a musical interpretation of the great warp speed interdimensional flux mishap of the year 2216. the track dubby is so named because it inherently describes the core feeling of the track! alien choirs and synched synths meet long delay lines in this dreamy piece.

l.m.y.e. (lend me your ears) are two bristol based friends who met via the idle hands record shop which is central to the city s burgeoning house scene. the pair combine their love for digging with a taste for the sound of classic 70 s and 80 s studio hardware.

animals on psychedelics is a new label out of cleethorpes, run by dj/promoter carl_h. through a combination of name, artwork and musical output, animals on psychedelics focuses on the more tripped out, spacey side of electronic music. the labels debut release is a three-track ep from london duo invisible menders, otherwise known as dom ahtuam & jane fitz, who have also released on porn wax and boe recordings.

severence is an electronic sound artist who lives in spain. mensch 003 experiments with various forms of chaotic sound & signal generation to create dense chaotic sound fields and other more relaxed ambient soundscapes. all tracks were recorded live in one take using a eurorack modular synth, a mixing desk and various effects pedals (no overdubs or post processing in the computer).

about a year ago nico stojan and acid pauli met at the studio to record some music. while doing so they discovered their common love for sample based production. so they were basically digging into old vinyls and eventually these three tracks came along. nothing more to say, but enjoy. call of the valley is the first release on the new label ouie: there has been a shift in this tiny piece of massive world and, like all other shifts, they are documented by those who were there. ouie is the label to do just that, created by the people who were there, making those shifts.

nightime drama is proud to present a 3 track ep from yoshihiro arikawa, featuring a remix by aubrey. the tokyo based producer yoshihiro arikawa is known for a compound of minimal and 90 s ghetto house, releasing a series of critically heralded eps on logistic in france, kb and his own label kodaira tracks under his alias d kawa between 2003 and 2009. after a short hiatus, arikawa restarted the activities under his real name and has revealed a new aspect of his music on a number of releases from international labels such as affin, hypnotic room, labyrinth, m_grey, toffler sound and swap. his first release on nightime drama comes with a remix from aubrey who is no stranger to any techno lover’s ears. with over 25 years in the industry, he has been involved with some of the biggest names in the business and brings a funky energetic remix to the release.

record kicks are extremely proud to present one of the hottest new names on the retro soul scene, the tibbs! proceeded by the smashing single next time , the tibbs debut album takin over will hit the streets on may 20. produced by paul willemsen (zuco 103 / lefties soul connection), recorded at the electric monkey studio in amsterdam using only vintage gear and mastered in nashville by soul veteran bob ohlsson (the guy who took care of mastering for many motown hits), takin over is indeed a breath of fresh air! from floor-shaking soul tunes like dog days , get back tuesday and next time , to the deep soul of wild way and funk stormer suffocated , singer elsa bekman - supported by a super tight big band - will impress everybody with her unique raw, gritty vocals that do not fear comparison with big names such as amy winehouse and duffy. based around amsterdam and founded by a bunch of northern-soul and funk disciples, the tibbs started in 2012 taking inspiration from the golden age of soul music. in 2014 they self-released a demo ep and they also released a 45 vinyl on german funk label tramp records. now, after a few exciting years turning heads and spreading soul tunes all around the country - including appearances at the legendary north sea jazz club and a live performances at national radio 6 - the tibbs are finally ready to make their official debut on record kicks. take notice, because the tibbs are the new name to watch!
